Mobile E-Profiling Demonstration

Funding source

Australian Flexible Learning Framework, Industry Engagement

Project Background

This project for a ‘Mobile Profiling’ E-Learning Demonstration is funded by Australian Flexible Learning Framework, Industry Engagement and will be completed in conjunction with GlobalNET ICT Pty Ltd and U&E ITAB. The project will integrate RFID technology with an institutional and organisational setting to deliver learning/assessment materials via enabled mobiles phones.

Currently, specially designed data entry cards (which can be filled out on paper or online in some cases) are used to track weekly work experiences. This is widely referred to in the industry as ‘profiling’. The on-the-job components are defined competency standards set by the electrotechnology industry for a range of national apprenticeships qualifications. The Paper based system has had a number of issues including a disconnect between the employers and the RTO in terms of the monitoring and reporting of the student’s on-the-job activity.

Under the revised Electrotechnology Training Package (UEE06) it is the responsibility of the RTO to ensure that the apprentice has covered the necessary on the job training before they can receive their qualification. Tracking of this information is currently an admin- intensive task which RTO head teachers/senior staff are having to undertake. If this reporting tool is successfully taken up it will allow these senior trainers and teachers to concentrate on teaching rather than chasing up students about their profiling.

Project Summary

To develop a pilot mobile phone based e-learning solution for the reporting and validation of the on-the-job training and work experience undertaken by electrical apprentices. This project sets out to replace the paper based system with a mobile/RFID program, for a more cost effective, reliable timely solution and aims to facilitate:

  • A singular process for gathering workplace evidence
  • Formal workplace information and evidence
  • Limited intervention in the workplace of assessors
  • Improvement in safety and safe work practises.
